Chatham Historic Dockyard Visit on May 7th 2015 to celebrate HMS Victory’s 250th Birthday. Do join us !!!!!

07/05/2015

A visit for The Nelson Society is planned to Chatham Dockyard on May 7th, it will be 250 years to the day that HMS Victory was launched. The launch was planned for St George’s day 1765 but like the later Great Eastern, Victory was the largest battleship at that date and did not wish to leave her dock when planned either.

To celebrate Chatham Dockyard has a very special exhibition currently on until May31st 2015.

It is ‘HMS Victory – The Untold Story’, curated by the historian and author, Brian Lavery. Alex Patterson, The Historic Dockyard Trust Curator and TNS member will meet us in The Exhibition itself to welcome us and talk to us about HMS Victory – the Untold Story. The centrepiece of the exhibition is HMS Victory’s figurehead on loan from The National Museum of The Royal Navy, Portsmouth. HM The Queen has loaned The Bullet that killed Admiral Lord Nelson and the National Maritime Museum has loaned two ship models of Victory, a stunning sword and lots of unseen artefacts and prints. Chris Brett and I have made a visit and feel this is a must see exhibition for Nelson Members as there is so much there to see, a day may not be enough !!!

Chatham Dockyard has the only working Ropery, where ropes for HMS Victory and other ships are still made. Three historic ships to see, one HMS Cavalier is berthed where HMS Victory was built. There are many exhibitions; one Hearts of Oak is on history of Chatham dockyard; another Steam Steel and Submarines is about the Industrial revolution and the two World Wars. With this in mind we plan as a group to visit The Untold Story, HMS and possibly The Ropery, which will need pre booking’ to allow members plenty of time to see what they most wish to see. Chatham is often for filming, very recently Call the Midwife and Mr Selfridge.

The Dockyard opens at 10.10am and closes at 6pm with plenty of free parking adjacent to the entry point. We will arrange for members to pick up their tickets and guide book at their leisure so they have time for morning coffee and to look about the dockyard  before we meet at 11.15 am in No 1 Smithery to tour The Untold Story at 11.30 am. If there is enough interest we will book a group Ropery tour in the afternoon. Later in the afternoon we will meet at the site of the Old single Dock where HMS Victory was built.

There are several eateries there offering snacks to hot meals as well as picnic facilities, so we have not pre booked refreshments or a lunch on this visit. There is 10% discount in The Dockyard shop on the day for society Members.

The cost for the day is £18.00 to include admission to Chatham Dockyard as a group and the Chatham Dockyard booklet each. There can be no refund for late cancellations.

Booking Form: please send to Genevieve St George, Flat 13, 40 Mellish Street, London E14 8 NS by April 23rd 2014. We look forward to seeing you on this very special day. Best wishes Genevieve and Chris
