Piraeus/Athens, Greece

15-19 May 2016

Following discussions with the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation based in the Greek port of Piraeus (see The Nelson Dispatch, vol. 12, pt 3, Summer 2015 pp. 146-51), the Foundation has kindly agreed to a Nelson Society visit to view the Nelson letter and artifact collection housed there. There are around 140 Nelson or Nelson-related letters, many of them unpublished. Whilst there we will take the opportunity to visit the famous Greek armoured cruiser Georgios Averof (1910) that played a significant role in the First and Second Balkan Wars as well as WWI and WWII. We will also visit the excellent Greek National Maritime Museum and spend a day in Athens visiting the Acropolis and the new Acropolis Museum. All these attractions are within easy reach of our hotel in Piraeus. The proposed schedule is:

Sunday 15 May: Fly to Athens then travel to Piraeus Hotel

Monday 16 May: Visit to the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation,

Tuesday 17 May: Visit to cruiser Georgios Averof and the Hellenic Maritime Museum

Wednesday 18 May: All day Athens (Acropolis/Parthenon and museum)

Thursday 19 May: Fly back to UK

Hotel: due to our connection with the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation the Hotel Poseidonio (3-5 Char. Trikoupi str., Piraeus, St Nikolaos, 185 36) is offering an excellent rate of €58 for a double room (including breakfast), email:

www.hotelposeidonio.com, tel: 00 30 210 428 6651 4. When booking please state that you are part of The Nelson Society group to receive this special rate (you might want to extend your stay for a couple of days for sightseeing!).

Flights: at present flights are quite cheap from UK to Athens (around £60 each way on Easyjet) so book early! Getting from Athens airport to Piraeus is quite easy – there is a regular bus service or a taxi will cost around €50.

Other costs to consider: eating out is quite reasonable as there are plenty of excellent tavernas and restaurants in Piraeus. There will be a few entrance fees for Athens and museums and travel cost to Athens and to the Georgios Averof.

This is a fabulous opportunity to have a private viewing of a unique collection of Nelsonia. If you wish to join us please book your flight and hotel and email me on nickslope@hotmail.com or send a large SAE (so I can get a sense of numbers) and I will keep you updated on progress and details of visit. I hope to see you there.
