‘NELSON IN NAPLES’: The 2016 Battle of Cape St Vincent Lecture and Buffet Luncheon

From 12.30. Friday 12th February 2016. The Union Jack Club, London, SE1 8UJ

stvincent2016

To commemorate Nelson’s first great victory in 1797 off Portugal’s Cape St Vincent, The Nelson Society is returning to The Union Jack Club for this always popular fixture (just a few yards from exit 2 of Waterloo Station, so easy access from all parts of the UK.)

Over the past few years the event has boasted top guest speakers like Andrew Lambert, the internationally renowned author and British Naval Historian; Jessica Lewis, the Curator of the Cutty Sark and Martyn Downer, the former Head of Jewellery at Sothebys and leading expert on historic artefacts, especially relating to Lord Nelson.

The 2016 lecture is ‘Nelson in Naples’ by Peter Gutteridge.

A long-standing member of The Nelson Society, Peter Gutteridge is a retired Senior Partner of a large law firm and has a Master’s Degree in Maritime History from the Greenwich Maritime Institute, Greenwich University. His interest in Nelson was originally fostered by his grandfather, Professor H.C.Gutteridge, who was a distinguished academic and author of “Nelson and the Neapolitan Jacobins,” a book published by the Navy Records Society in 1903 and reprinted some 10 years ago. This recounts and analyses Nelson’s famous role (infamous, many will say) in the suppression of the Jacobin revolution in June 1799 and this will be discussed in Peter’s presentation.
