The Immortal Memory 2016

HAYDN’S NELSON MASS in The Old Royal Naval College  Greenwich at 11am Sunday January 10th 2016 at 11 am

 THE IMMORTAL MEMORY OF ADMIRAL LORD NELSON will be given by Admiral Lord West of Spithead as 2016 marks 210 Years since Admiral Lord Nelson Lay in State in The Painted Hall

To celebrate these historic events, The Greenwich Foundation for The Old Royal Naval College, The Nelson Society, with The Royal Naval Chapel, will meet again at Morning Service for Haydn’s Nelson Mass on Sunday January 10th 2016The Greenwich, Deptford and Rotherhithe Sea Cadets will be in attendance. Following the service we are invited to join the congregation in the King William Undercroft for morning coffee. Lunch will be announced at 1.15pm so we will be seated in The King Queen Mary  Undercroft by 1.30pm for Grace.  After lunch we move to The Painted Hall, where we will see the completed restoration of the Upper Hall, where Admiral Lord Nelson lay in State. We will be entertained by the Sea Cadets before The Immortal Memory of Admiral Lord Nelson at 3.30 pm. It will  be given by Admiral Lord West of Spithead. Later we are invited to join The Nelson Antiques Roadshow, arranged by the Warwick Leadley Gallery, in the twilight of The Painted Hall. Please bring your own treasure especially any relating to The Lying in State of Admiral Lord Nelson.

The cost for the day will be £38.00 per person to include the day’s luncheon, refreshments, the port toast and a donation to The Painted Hall Conservation Project. The Greenwich Foundation for ORNC have a time limited matched funding offer and this function is to help raise much needed funds towards the restoration of the main Hall of The Painted Hall to hopefully begin early in 2016.

Luncheon Menu:

Broadsides: Poached and Panfried Chicken Breast, Fondant potatoes and Creamy Butternut Squash. Vegetarian option Creamy Risotto with Artichokes with broad beans and peas.

Victory Dessert: Spiced Apple Crumble with custard. Coffee, Tea and Infusions

(The price includes half a bottle of wine or soft drink with lunch and a glass of Port for each adult for The Immortal Memory Toast)

Pictured are images of the First Sea Lords visit to HMS Somerset,18th - 20th June 2004, whilst she was berthed in Valletta Harbour, Malta. The First Sea Lord, as well as visiting the ship, took on other engagements ashore, such as a tour of Valletta Harbour on a Maltese Naval vessel, a tour of Maltas Naval Museum and the First Sea Lord was also the inspecting officer of the local Sea Cadet Group. The First Sea Lord also met the Maltese Prime Minister and the Head of the Mltese Armed Forces. Onboard HMS Somerset, the First Sea Lord was invited, along with other dignitaries, to attend an evening Cocktail party and a Luncheon party. He also met selected ships company and presented medals in what was to be a busy couple of days for the First Sea Lord and the ships company. HMS Somerset visited Malta between 18th - 21st June and sailed for Bahrain to continue her Gulf deployment LA (Phot ) Allen

Born 1948, Admiral Lord West joined the Navy in 1965. He spent the majority of his naval career at sea, serving in fourteen different ships and commanding three of them. In 1980 he took command of the frigate HMS ARDENT taking her south to the Falkland Islands in 1982 where she was sunk in their successful recapture. He was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his part in the action and led the Victory Parade through the City of London.

He served  three years as Chief of Defence Intelligence covering the Kosovo War. He was promoted to Admiral in November 2000 when he became Commander-in-Chief Fleet, NATO Commander-in-Chief East Atlantic and NATO Commander Allied Naval Forces North. He led the United Kingdom’s maritime response to 9/11 including the invasion of Afghanistan.

He became First Sea Lord in September 2002. He inspired and organized the Trafalgar Bicentennial Year and led the Navy during its crucial and successful role in the initial invasion of Iraq. He retired as First Sea Lord on 7 February and advised both Conservatives and Labour on defence and foreign policy before, in July 2007, being asked by Gordon Brown to join the Government as one of the GOATs (Government of All The Talents) responsible for national security and counter-terrorism as well as cyber and Olympic security.

He produced the United Kingdom’s first ever National Security Strategy and Cyber Security strategy as well as formulating a series of other groundbreaking strategies:  the counter-terrorist policy (Contest 2); cyber security; CBRN (Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear; science and technology for countering international terrorism; guidance for local government in enhancing the security of crowded places. He put in place the basic construct for Olympic security for 2012 Olympics.  He was Chairman of The National Security Forum.

He left government in May 2010 and is currently Chancellor of Southampton Solent University, chairman or strategic advisor to a number of companies, a motivational speaker, media commentator on defence and security and regular speaker in the House of Lords. He is much sought after to advise on strategic risk.

Lord West was made a Knight Commander of the Order of The Bath in 2000, Knight Grand Cross in 2004, Baron in 2007 and a Privy Counselor in 2010.
