Nelson Society Visit to Pepys Exhibition at RMG and Luncheon on March 17th 2016

17/03/2016 @ 10:00 - 17:00

We are invited to visit The Pepys Exhibition with Curator Kris Martin, at The Royals Museum Greenwich ( RMG) on March 17th 2016. We will meet in The Samy Ofer wing from 10.00 am onwards for morning coffee as it is close by the Cloakroom to leave coats and bags and the Pepys exhibition.

Kris will join us at about 11 am to tell us a little about the exhibition before taking us down to it as in the Samy Ofer wing. The gallery has been transformed into 17th century London streets and salons. It begins on a cold January day when a 15 year old Pepys skips school in 1649 to see history in the making!! We will then be led through this turbulent period of London’s history with Mr Pepys – what a time to be alive in London until his death in 1703. Pepys was employed by the Navy Board and much of what he established in ship building and the Navy was crucial to making us a great Naval power in Georgian times enabling Nelson and others to make Britain the greatest naval nation of the period.

After a wonderful morning in the gallery we will lunch at The Devonport Hotel and like Pepys we will enjoy excellent food and company. The menu is of the period.

Main course : Tumeric crusted lamb cannon, lamb faggot, pea & leek risotto, nicoise garnish

Vegetarian  :  Tastings of  Cauliflower, a medley of cauliflower prepared 4 ways with burnt onion, potato fondant and petit herbs

Dessert : the choice is: Caramelised apple with crumble top, rosemary crème anglais &honeycomb ice cream OR Warm Chocolate fondant with merlot syrup berries & cherry crumble ice cream !!!!

Price includes two courses, water with lunch, tea and coffee after the meal.

After lunch we can see the recently restored Selling flag from HMS Minotaur, now on display

In Nelson, Navy, Nation. This historic flag flew on HMS Minotaur at The Battle of Trafalgar, it was then in the care of The Hilton family in Selling. A replica has been made and given to St Mary’s Church in Selling. The Nelson Society have been proactive in the flag coming to RMG.

Some may wish to have a second visit to Pepys or we can end the day over tea in the cafe there.

The cost including the company of Kris at the exhibition, morning coffee and lunch for RMG members is £30.00 pp and for non RMG members it is £39.00.We can be up to 30 people so book early Closing date is March 10th 2016. Both Sue Morris and Paul Ganjou & other TNS members say this is a Must See as Once is not enough for Pepys!!  Best wishes Genevieve
