The Nelson Society Hilborough Visit

04/06/2016 - 05/06/2016

We still have some places for the Hilborough visit especially Saturday afternoon and evening.

4-5 June 2016

Richard Carden and I have been working on a visit to Hilborough as it has very strong connections with The Nelson Family, especially the 13th Century church of All Saints, as his Brother, Father, Grandfather and an uncle were all Rector there. Nelson’s two older siblings, Horace and Edmund, are buried there as well as other relatives. Reverend Edmund Nelson and his family only moved to Burnham Thorpe in 1756 and Nelson was born there on 29th September 1758.  Hilborough is a village Nelson would have known well as a child. His uncle was Rector there at that time and his paternal Grandmother and other relatives were still living in the village.  After the Battle of The Nile Nelson was awarded a peerage and chose the title Baron Nelson of The Nile and Hilborough.

Reverend Charles Sherlock has invited The Nelson Society to attend Morning Service in All Saints, Hilborough, at 11am on Sunday June 5th 2016. After Morning service we have organised a Sunday Carvery lunch in The Swan Pub, Hilborough.

On Saturday  4th June we have arranged a guided tour of All Saints Church at 2.30 pm at £5.00 pp with Margaret, who is a local historian. Afterwards there will be tea and biscuits at The Swan before a walk around Hilborough, in Nelson’s footsteps, with TNS member Richard Carden who lives in the village.  Dinner Saturday evening is at 8pm at The Olde Windmill, Gt Cressingham.

There is overnight accommodation available for TNS members at the following:
