Trafalgar Weekend 2017
20/10/2017 - 22/10/2017
THE NELSON SOCIETY TRAFALGAR WEEKEND
AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
20-22 OCTOBER 2017 AT CHATHAM
We are delighted to confirm the arrangements for our forthcoming Trafalgar Weekend, and a booking form is enclosed. Accommodation has been reserved at the Bridgewood Manor Hotel, Chatham, where we have obtained a discounted booking rate (see booking form for details). All events will take place at the hotel unless otherwise indicated. The Annual General Meeting will be held on the morning of Trafalgar Day, Saturday 21 October, and all members are warmly invited to attend. The Trafalgar Dinner will take place on Saturday evening. Your Committee has organised a programme of interesting optional events for Friday, Saturday and Sunday and we hope that you will be able to attend as many of these as possible. Our programme will be as follows:
Friday 20 October
Register in the afternoon at the Bridgewood Manor. The Chairman and Committee will host an early evening Reception for new members and for those attending a Trafalgar Weekend for the first time.
Dinner will be available at the hotel at a discounted price.
At 7.30pm we will have a showing of Dr Nick Slope’s TV programme on Nelson’s Island, with a lecture by Dr Ceridwen Boston of Linacre College, Oxford, ‘The men of Nelson’s Navy – a study of the skeletons of common seamen and marines of the Royal Navy (1750-1815)’. Dr Boston assisted Nick in his research, and her field is osteology, specialising in 18th century Royal Naval skeletons.
Saturday 21 October
Nelson Society merchandise will be available to purchase at our Sales Table from 8.30am. At 9.30am a guest speaker from Chatham Dockyard will give a lecture on ‘The History of Chatham Dockyard’, and this will be followed by coffee and the Annual General Meeting at 11.15am.
After a buffet lunch at the hotel, we shall transfer by coach to Chatham Historic Dockyard, for a guided tour which will include the Victorian Ropery. Before returning to the hotel we shall be making a Presentation of a Nelson Society Associate plaque to the Dockyard.
The Chairman’s Reception and Trafalgar Dinner will be held in the evening.
Sunday 22 October
Members are welcome to attend Morning Service at Rochester Cathedral, making their own transport arrangements. Lunch will be arranged in a local venue and further details will be advised. Sunday lunch will be the final organised event of the weekend, but members may wish to stay on to take advantage of the many attractions in the area.
