TRAFALGAR WEEKEND AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2019 – BATH
October 18 @ 12:00 - October 20 @ 17:00
We are delighted to be holding our AGM and Trafalgar Weekend in Bath this year, following the successful launch of the Bath Nelson Trail, developed between the Society and UNESCO World Heritage. The event will be centred in the recently refurbished Hilton Bath City Hotel, where we have negotiated a discounted room rate.
Registration will take place on the afternoon of Friday 18th, followed by an early evening Welcome Reception for those attending a Trafalgar Weekend for the first time. After dinner (a ‘meal deal’ will be arranged in the hotel, if there is sufficient demand), a series of lectures will be held. Firstly, Professor Barry Gilbertson, Chairman of the City of Bath UNESCO World Heritage, will discuss the origin of World Heritage and how Bath’s inscription on the world
list in 1987 makes it one of only two cities in Europe with a citywide World Heritage Site designation. We then turn to ‘family matters’. Society member David Bullock will describe his discovery of his Nelson antecedents, followed by Raglan Tribe who will talk about ‘Nelson – the Aftermath’. The evening concludes with an address from our President, the Hon Peregrine Nelson Hood, on Hood and Nelson – two naval families entwined.
Our keynote speaker for Saturday morning is past Nelson Society Chairman Louis Hodgkin. Louis is the author of the Society publication ‘Nelson and Bath’ and his talk, ‘The Comforts of Bath’ will show what 18th-century Bath had to offer, through the example of the Nelson family and its other naval associations. Louis’ talk will be followed by the AGM and a buffet lunch.
On Saturday afternoon we will have guided walks along the Nelson Trail. The evening commences with the Chairman’s Reception, followed by the Trafalgar Dinner.
On the Sunday morning we hope to attend a church service at St Swithin’s, Walcot – the burial place of Sir Edward Berry – walking distance from the hotel.
Early booking is recommended and a Booking Form is enclosed – return to the Secretary, Sue Morris by 31 August.
